Edenvale Holiday Cottages: Craig-E-Brae

About Craig-e-Brae

Craig-e-Brae was built in the mid 1800’s with a thatched roof. Then in 1936, the thatched roof was taken off, the walls raised and covered with a slate roof.

In 1964, the chimneys were rebuilt and the walls replastered. In 1996, a major restoration took place, modernising the facilities, whilst retaining its original (traditional) appearance and charm. The old peat shed has been converted into a single garage. The horsewalk is intact with some of the mechanical apparatus in place. This system of cogs, shafts and pulley wheels drove plunge churns and a threshing machine / corn cleaner in what was known as the Dairy. (the exposed stone built outhouses remain standing)

The cottage was owned by my Great Grandfather, Alexander Craig. Craig-e-Brae (Craig on the Hill) was named by my Great Uncle, James Craig, after he emigrated to America in 1906.
