The Longest Yarn Exhibition

An exhibition focusing on the events of D-Day in Normandy

The Longest Yarn is a global community of makers united in commemorating pivotal moments of the Second World War through large-scale, hand-crafted textile installations.

The debut project, The Longest Day, was created to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day on 6 June 2024. This extraordinary 3D artwork stretches 80 metres, with each metre capturing a moment from one of the 80 days of the Battle of Normandy — from the storming of the beaches to the liberation of Paris.

Entirely crafted through knitting and crochet, this remarkable piece was brought to life by dedicated volunteers from around the world. Following its tour across the UK, Ireland and the United States, The Longest Yarn is coming to Mossley Mill from 2 November 2026 to 19 March 2027.

Come and experience this unique and moving tribute to the people, stories and events of D-Day, brought to life one stitch at a time.
